Pan and the Duality of The Devil and The Lovers
Pan and the Devil/Lovers Duality By Fern Nightingale
We are in the early stages of preparing for Spring Mysteries Festival 2025! This is an absolutely beautiful and life changing experience that I would recommend to anyone who finds themselves on a magical or pagan path.
I have been given the great honor of being the vessel of Pan this year for Spring Mysteries. Pan is the God of the untamed wilderness, shepherds, and rustic music. He loves to spend his time wooing nymphs in the mountains. He is the presence you feel watching you in the woods. The beauty of nature, and the fear-inducing unknown that lives within.
As I’ve been chosen as his vessel, I’ve been working with his energy quite a bit. Something that’s been standing out to me lately are the Lovers and the Devil cards in tarot. These two cards reflect the whole of Pan. The Devil represents fear, base instincts, entrapment, obsession, and helplessness. Our shadow. The Lovers represent harmony, love, freedom, choice, and balance. What most of us strive for.
Pan was stripped (not in a fun way) of all of his good qualities and painted as the Christian Devil. In reality, yes, temptation and excess are themes that Pan embodies, but he is so much more. He is joy and frolicking and freedom. Running through a meadow. Playing sweet melodies beside a river. He is the decaying logs, new sprouts, and seemingly eternal pines. He is both “good” and “bad”, just as we all have our inner light and shadow selves. The most important lesson these cards remind us of is that we get to choose how we look at the world, and ourselves. Our shadows are not necessarily burdensome. Our light not necessarily virtuous.
Do you want to see the world as the Devil, or the Lovers? Let Pan walk with you and remind you to see the beauty in the rot and decay as much as in the new blooms and shining sun on damp leaves.
Spring Mysteries Festival runs from April 17th-20th 2025 in SeaTac, Washington. Come experience the mysteries and awe-inspiring love of the Goddess with us! You never know, it could just be the thing that changes your life for the better.
